Techniques such as granulation and applied wire work were rediscovered during the 1800s notably based on Greek and Etruscan jewelry uncovered from archeological sites.

Two luminaries in the field that contributed to its long popularity were Castellani and Guillano.

Luckily for us mortals, there are stellar examples that don't always command 5 to 6 figure price tags.

One such is this awe-inspiring brooch utilizing the ram's head at one side, and a spiral of and circular wheel at the other.

Well over 120 different orbs or bits of twisted gold elements were adhered to the surface of this marvel. The surface resembles a tapestry of lights and darks, forms, and recesses for an unbelievably rich brooch in 18k gold.
